Three prayers began the evening: one in Arabic, another in Hindi and the last in English. In that spirit of diversity, the second annual Kathy Humphrey Diversity Award ceremony was held Tuesday evening in the Samuel Cupples House.
“We live in a challenging time,” said Kavita Rajah, president of the International Student Federation and master of ceremonies, “a time when ignorance and injustice are so prevalent. Who are the people who can make a difference?” she asked.
The answer to her question was the 10 recipients of the diversity award.
Rajah explained that these award winners were being recognized for their “extraordinary commitment to think differently” and their example as “men and women for others.”
Three faculty received awards: Mark Chmiel, Ph.D., a professor in theological studies; Emmanuel Uwalaka, Ph.D., a professor in political science and Michelle Lorenzini, Ph.D., also a professor in political science.
Staff members Donna Bess, program coordinator for Student Life; Jennifer Ewald, director of the International Center and Sam Kelner, program coordinator of Campus Recreation also received awards.
In addition, four students received awards: Leila Lavasani, president of the Model United Nations and the Arab League Association; Erhime Oghre-Ikanone, president of the African Student Association/Model Organization of African Unity; David Young, Black Student Alliance president and Rajah.
The evening concluded by recognizing Vice President Kathy Humphrey, for whom the award is named.
Rajah said, “As busy as you are, you always take the time … to hear what we need and to help.”
