Saint Louis University offers a multitude of clubs and
activities. Participation allows students the opportunity to meet
new people and a chance to be leaders among their peers.
New or returning students interested in such opportunities may
want to consider joining SLU’s Student Government Association.
Under President Nick Sarcone, this organization’s main priority is
to serve the students–more than 50 of whom are SGA members.
“We’re here to represent you. If you have problems, you need to
come to us because we can help you, and if not, we know the people
who can,” Sarcone said.
Public safety, finance, civic relations, residence and commuter
concerns are just a handful of issues that SGA covers. The SGA also
oversees the budgets for chartered student organizations.
Six senate seats are currently available for freshmen students.
Individuals interested in running for a senate position must be
able to attend the weekly SGA meetings held on Wednesday nights at
5 p.m. in the new chambers in the Busch Student Center.
Senators must also represent their constituency responsibly and
actively and be a sovereign member (full or part-time student) at
SLU. Those interested in running should pick up an application in
the SGA office of the BSC.
Students unable to meet the weekly Wednesday night commitment
can still participate in SGA external affairs.
Sarcone also urges students to become members of school-wide
committees appointed by University President Lawrence Biondi,
S.J.
In order to keep students informed, the weekly SGA meetings will
now be televised on SLU’s television network. Sarcone says the
benefits of SGA are abundant, but the job is not always easy.
“It’s fun. You have a good time doing it, but you have to work
hard to solve problems,” Sarcone said.
