SLUHOPS, the on-campus swing dance club, has scheduled its
events for the 2003-2004 academic year.
The SLUHOPS events begin on Sept. 5 and are open to all who are
interested. Admission is free. The other dates for SLUHOPS dances
will be Sept. 20, Oct. 31, Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 in the Saint Louis
Room in the Busch Student Center. Aside from the free dances held
on Sept. 5 and Oct. 31, the activity fee is $3. SLUHOPS designed
these dances so that all students, regardless of dance experience,
can learn to dance and socialize on a budget. A dance instructor
from Fusion Dance Studio will be present.
SLUHOPS was started last semester by seniors Dan Vianello and
Bridget White. The two individuals wanted to start a club that gave
SLU an opportunity to have swing dancing on campus. SLUHOPS, an
acronym that stands for Saint Louis University Lindy Hop Society,
is derived from the Lindy Hop form of swing that began in
Harlem.
SLUHOPS hopes to rouse students’ interest in swing dance and
help students learn the basics of the dance style. The club meets
every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each week, an instructor
from Fusion Dance Studio teaches lessons and offers members an
in-depth series of lessons.
Further, neither experience nor a partner are necessary. The
club costs $15 per semester to join.
The club plans on holding events in conjunction with other
organizations throughout the community. SLUHOPS plans to attend
events at Washington University and a National Exchange, where
students interact with other swing-dance clubs across the
nation.
