Turn Off the Trash

To the Editor: I am a new student at Saint Louis University, and my experience at the school has been positive in many ways.  The classes I am taking are interesting, and the teachers I have had contact with seem dedicated to their work and ready to help students learn.  Outside the classroom, however, there are some things I have experienced that have really disappointed me. I found out quickly that if you want to go to Griesedieck Cafeteria or Fusz Food Court for lunch, you are going to be subjected to whatever is showing on TV.  Normally this would not be a big deal, but many of the times I’ve eaten at Griesedieck or Fusz they were showing what I would consider to be offensive sexual material involving women. This is a big problem for me personally because I am Catholic, and I believe Jesus, who said, “He who looks upon a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”  I am trying, along with many other Catholic men who attend SLU, to grow in love for women as persons who deserve respect, rather than to view them as objects that I can use to give myself pleasure.  It is hard enough to strive for this goal without having to be bombarded with degrading images during lunch hour.  I want to make it clear, however, that this is not only a Catholic issue.  I know that many Protestants, Muslims and Jews feel the same way.  Within each of these religious groups, which comprise a large portion of the SLU student body, is a strong sense of the need for women to be seen as persons and not objects.   In light of all this, I would like to ask Saint Louis University to respect its students’ religions, respect women and change the channel.    William HanneganFreshman, Philosophy Major
