Saint Louis University will continue the tradition of Mass of the Holy Spirit today. The service begins at St. Francis Xavier College Church at 11 a.m. The Mass of the Holy Spirit marks the official start to the academic year.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit has long been a custom at Jesuit universities and high schools, said Abby Braun, liturgy coordinator for Campus Ministry. The practice is rooted in the sixteenth century.
“We ask the Holy Spirit to guide us throughout the year. Readings during the Mass focus on calling the Holy Spirit,” said Braun.
There will be an opening procession featuring the different colleges and their respective deans.
University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., will celebrate the Mass.
“Classes are cancelled, so there’s no excuse not to go,” said junior Greg Orf, a member of the 10 p.m. Mass Choir. The choir will be performing today.
Because administrators feel strongly about the event’s tradition, no classes will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. so that students, faculty and staff can attend the Mass as well as the subsequent “Welcome Home to Your Academic Community” events.
“These events are to help students and faculty connect at the beginning of the year,” said Paaige K. Turner, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Communication who is organizing the “Welcome Home” activities.
“[We] encourage all students to have lunch with their academic unit.”
