Members of the Student Government Association gathered for their first meeting of the year yesterday evening. The brief session was followed by a “meet and greet” where senators dispersed across campus to interact with their constituents.
“We’re really trying to reach out,” SGA President Sam Howard said. “Some students on campus don’t even know who their senators are.”
Howard said that the purpose of the meet and greet was to tell students about what SGA does and how they can be a part of student government.
“We don’t have all of our senators chosen yet,” Howard said, “so we want to make it clear to students that [SGA] cares.”
The senators walked to locations around campus where they would likely encounter the most students.
“We’re split up mostly into residence halls and some dining areas,” Howard said.
The SGA senators stood at the entrance to the Busch Student Center, one of their many meet and greet locations, and handed out blue Frisbees, lanyards, and pamphlets with information about what SGA is planning for the year and how students can get involved.
“I hope people are enthusiastic about SGA and know that they can make a difference on campus,” said Danny Rooney, a senator representing Parks College. “[The administration] does look for [student] opinions and students do have a voice.”
