As the temperature drops and the winter months set in, Saint Louis University students should prepare themselves for the possibility of inclement weather-and the policies that correspond.
According to SLU’s emergency policy system, there are three types of closure: snow schedule, cancellation of classes and closure of the university. Snow schedule means that all classes and events before 10 a.m. are canceled. Cancellation of classes means classes are suspended, but all other University activities are unaffected. Closure of the university means that all University activities are canceled and offices are closed.
The first two closures affect students only, so eateries and other offices are supposed to remain open. The third closure requires only emergency essential employees, such as the Department of Public Safety, designated staff in the Department of Housing Residence Life, the operations staff of Information Technology Services and all SLUCare staff to report to work.
“The principal criterion the University uses in deciding to remain open or to close. is whether or not the sidewalks and parking areas on campus can be cleared in time for classes and other operations,” Provost Joseph Weixlmann said through university spokesperson Clayton Berry.
After consulting the grounds department, the Provost makes the final decision about closing the university and what type of closure is most appropriate. Each storm is treated on a case by case basis.
“Generally, the University makes the decision no later than 4 a.m.,” Weixlmann said. “If there were to be a closure in the afternoon, the University generally makes that decision by 2 p.m.”
If inclement weather is expected, information on closings can be found by calling the Snowline at 977-SNOW.
