Like her or not, I guarantee you were asked within the last few days what you thought of Taylor Swift’s latest single, “Look What You Made Me Do.” This is the first single from her new album, “Reputation,” which is scheduled for release this coming November. Swift released the music video at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and then immediately uploaded it to YouTube. The song crushed records, including most watched music video within a 24-hour time period at 39 million views, beating Adele’s “Hello” which previously held the record at 27.7 million views.

“Look What You Made Me Do” is Swift’s “come-back” song after a three-year break since her last album, “1989”. Since then, Swift has been pulled into multiple feuds with other artists and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Katy Perry and Calvin Harris. “Look What You Made Me Do” takes jabs at all of her opponents, and that was made even clearer in the music video.

Director, Joseph Khan, made sure to help show off Swift’s new image, which is introduced within the first few seconds of the music video. In the beginning, we see Swift burying a younger version of herself, signaling that that version of Swift is gone. The music video displays Swift in multiple scenes, each one representing something for which she faced criticism.

The music video takes an even crazier turn as we see Swift standing on a mountain of older versions of herself clawing their way to the top. Then all of them explode away from her as she claims that the “old Taylor” is dead. Swift follows the scene with a dance break, trying to disprove the myth that she cannot dance.

The best part of the music video comes at the end, when all of Swift’s former selves begin to talk amongst themselves and use lines that were used against her throughout the years about being fake, playing the victim and, finally, wanting to be “excluded from this narrative”.

Overall, this music video caught people’s attention and sparked controversy amongst all the drama. It makes viewers who are in the loop analyze every aspect of the clip and anxiously await more of what’s to come in this new era of Taylor Swift. But, for those not in the loop, it may be seen as plotless and incohesive. One thing is known for sure, though: whatever comes from Swift’s new album will be something that everyone will be talking about.
