Men’s Soccer Upsets Reigning National Champion
The mood at Hermann Stadium was intense and energized for Saturday’s homecoming game against Stanford, when SLU men’s soccer upset the No. 5 ranked Cardinal 2-0.
Despite trailing in overall shots (16-9) and not being able to get through the Stanford defense in the first half, SLU found the net twice in the second half.
In the 57th minute, sophomore forward Leo Novaes opened scoring on a feed from junior forward Jacob Krupp.
If the sizeable crowd wasn’t already excited enough, freshman forward Spencer Jones scored an insurance tally just four minutes later, fed by junior defender Eric Davies.
After these goals, SLU buckled down on defense and secured the second win in two games at Hermann Stadium. Just a couple days earlier, on Thurs., Sept. 21, women’s soccer routed St. Bonaventure 5-0, starting their conference season on a high note.
It’s a short turnaround for the Billikens, who hosted Denver on Tues., Sept. 26 and U-Mass on Sat. Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m for Saturday’s game.
