With the semester coming to a close and the millennium approaching, KSLU, Saint Louis University’s campus radio, will finally get a facelift to greet the New Year.
Renovation plans were originally set for Dec. 6 but have been pushed back until Dec. 27. Jason Sengheiser, the General Manager of KSLU, said that the room will be decorated in blue, based on KSLU colors. New carpet will be installed over the tile in every room except for the music director’s office. The walls will be repainted, and new ceiling tiles will be added as well.
This overhaul is considered a part of routine maintenance; thus, KSLU does not have to pay for any renovations. Instead, SLU’s Facilities Management department will cover any costs.
Carpeting contractor Lee Kaufman will install the carpet instead of in-house maintenance workers. “Sometimes it’s easier and more cost effective to hirer outside contractors,” said Facilities Manager Tom Theurer.
Sengheiser took office early last May and started a push for the renovations. Last spring KSLU ran into a storage dilemma, and while planning efforts to alleviate that problem Sengheiser noticed that the station itself could use a little remodeling. Sengheiser then approached Theurer and Chris Grabau, Student Activities Coordinator from Student Life and the KSLU advisor, to make the request.
“A nicer facility can lead to a lot of things, such as respect and a professional atmosphere, which we’re always looking for,” Sengheiser said.
Derek Johannsen, a first-year DJ, agrees with all the enhancements. “The improvements are good, but with even more funding we can become a radio station that reaches out to everyone at SLU and the surrounding areas,” Johannsen said.
The new look could not have come at a better time, considering KSLU’s progress and upcoming plans. “Professionalism will be even more important next semester when the station starts broadcasting over the World Wide Web,” Sengheiser said.
