It is true that the only other overseas campus that Saint Louis University owns is in the campus in Madrid. However, that does not mean that students are limited to attending only that study-abroad program. Students can also attend classes in Lyon, France.
Last year there were 10 students who attended the school. Next year one of the students who will be making the trip overseas is Marguerite Hall resident Jeanne Granda from South County.
“My major is French, so I think it would be the best thing for me to do,” Granda said. “Plus it would be a really good way for me to be able to experience another culture.”
Living in Lyon for a year is obviously one way for someone to become engulfed in French Culture. There are also other outlets though for students to learn about the country, which is rich in art and history.
Students have the option to live with a host family of their choice for the duration of the stay. This usually makes the trip more pleasurable for students.
“Once a student stayed with a family of painters, which helped the student learn more about the art and history of the country,” said Annie Smart, a foreign language professor. “Another time a host family took the student to their chateau for the weekends.”
French culture is not all that students will be learning while in Lyon, the second largest city in France. American students will be taking classes geared towards foreign students with people from all over the globe, such as Germany, Poland and Africa.
This means that teachers are giving class in French, but not for students who speak the language fluently.
These classes cover the more general, and core classes students need, such as theology and mathematics. Students, however, can take more specialized classes, geared towards their majors. These would be with French students in regular classes, which are not geared toward foreign students.
The program has been offered for students since the mid 1990s and has been a positive experience for those who have attended. To attend, one needs to be taking classes in the 310 and 315 of French.
The cost of attending is included in SLU’s tuition; therefore, all scholarships and financial aid transfer.
