Give A Loud Cheer For `Bring It On’

No, Bring It On isn’t the dialogue of a seventh grade fight as one might expect. It is actually the title of a recently-released video from Universal Pictures.

The movie is a comedy about two cheerleading squads.

Yes, it sounds like it should belong in the same category as Clueless, but Bring It On has more quality.

Two cheerleading squads are opposite in about every way possible. One is from an inner-city school with little money and no experience in the national tournament and the other is from a wealthy school subsidized by rich parents and a few girls that will do anything to win their sixth-straight national title.

The captain of the prep school’s squad secretly videotapes the inner city squad’s performances and then teaches the routines to her squad as original.

After that captain’s reign is over, she passes the torch to Torrance, a little blonde with spunk and charm.

On her first day as captain, Torrance forces the squad to try an incredibly difficult pyramid, only to end up with one cheerleader who is forced out of the rest of the season because of broken bones from a fall.

The squad needs a new cheerleader, but their options do not look promising at all.

Torrance finally chooses Missy, a sarcastic girl who is blunt and opinionated, but who has killer gymnastic skills. When Missy shows up at the first practice, she realizes that the squad’s routines were stolen and informs Torrance.

Torrance tries to be an honest competitor by attempting to convince the squad to make up a new routine, but they refuse. The squad thinks it is too late to come up with a new routine and they decide to use their stolen routine.

The squad makes it past regionals only because of an automatic bid for the previous champions, but Torrance then realizes that they must do something extra if they want to win nationals.

The rest of the movie revolves around the national competition. Both the prep-school squad and the inner-city squad come to the competition and one of them walks away as the new national champion.

The directors of this movie accomplished the goal of making a new, upbeat comedy for the end of the summer. The ending wasn’t too predictable, and the actors were, well, peppy. Though this movie included a few tasteless jokes, it turned out to be a fairly complex movie with an interesting opening and closing. To the people who disagree, Bring it On! B
