Residents in the Griesedieck Complex will no longer have to sweat out those sticky St. Louis heat waves.
In his November Web Message, University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J. stated that air-conditioning units will be installed in every room in the Griesedieck Complex. The air-conditioning system will be funded through Project SLU2000.
“We really have heard a lot from the students on this issue,” said Kathy Humphrey, vice president for Student Development. “I’m excited. We’re going to rewire the building, and students will no longer need doctor’s excuses for air conditioners.”
Director of Residence Life Leonard Jones said, “From my perspective and from what I’ve seen, this is obviously something the students and parents desire.”
Assistant Director of Residence Life Lisa Thompson said that prospective students who were informed about the air conditioning were pleased with the change.
Patrick Ozbun, a sophomore resident in Griesedieck Hall, said, “It would greatly improve the living standards here. It will make the rooms much more comfortable during the early fall and late spring.”
During the early weeks of school, Griesedieck Complex experienced numerous power outages as a result of the large number of air conditioners and other electrical devices. In mid-September, Director of Building Services Mike G’Sell stated, “We can possibly do something over Christmas break.” That prediction will come true.
Workers will begin electrical upgrades over Christmas break. Installation of the units into the rooms will begin in January and are projecting to be done some time in March.
Jones explained that from what he had heard, students with air conditioners will not have to remove them this year. “After students move out, they can really get in there and do the work,” Jones said.
