Spring Fever will continue. But so will the wrought-iron fence that will surround part of the event’s fairgrounds.
At a meeting between Student Government Association President Jay Perry, Vice President for Student Development Kathy Humphrey and Facilities Services representatives on Tuesday, the parties involved agreed that some of the fence will be removed for Spring Fever. The fence will enclose the green space at Vandeventer and Laclede avenues.
Facilities Services said that the department will dismantle four of the eight sections of the structure so that people can move freely between the stage area and the rest of the fair. The event is scheduled for April 27.
Perry issued a statement on the agreement: “I believe that the situation with the fence, specifically with the limitations it could impose on Spring Fever, has been solved satisfactorily. Facilities Services has proved willing to work with us on the issues at hand, and come up with `workable compromises.'”
Perry wished that the fence would not be constructed, but he said that he realized he could not change the administration’s decision. He also stated that “there would be a written agreement between the SGA and Facilities” to remove the fence for major events at the green space.
Student Activities Board President Ryan Murphy is pushing for six sections to be taken down. He said that will give the event a more friendly atmosphere and allow for students to move more freely between the stage area and the rest of the grounds.
“With six pieces (taken away), it wouldn’t be a problem,” said Murphy. “With four, it could be a problem. There will still be a barrier.”
Kathleen Brady, vice president of Facilities Management and Civic Affairs, stated, “The fence won’t interfere with the Spring Fever event.”
Last week, members of Facilities Services notified Murphy and the co-chairwomen of the event, Cab Gutting and Barbara Montgomery, that the fence would be built as soon as the weather warmed up. Construction hasn’t started yet, but work crews have been at the green space for the past week, getting ready to set up the Trova sculptures. The sculptures should not provide SAB a problem for the event. Murphy said that SAB will plan the event around them.
Murphy added that he, Gutting and Montgomery will have to tweak some of their original plans, such as where to place the stage and change the location of some of the student booths because part of the fence will be in the way.
