Millions have died, yet their impact remains, immortalized in fabric and stitches.
On April 2-4, part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display in the Saint Louis Room in the Busch Memorial Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
The quilt is being sponsored by DeMattias Hall Council and the Saint Louis University Greek Community.
DeMattias Community Development Coordinator Luke Latour said the idea to bring part of the quilt to SLU was conceived by looking at things that could reflect on the needs of the outside community.
According to Latour, with medications that can prolong suffering and even the life of AIDS victims, many people in America don’t realize that the problem continues to grow throughout the world.
“The quilt reminds us that people are still dying from AIDS,” Latour said.
The section of the AIDS quilt visiting SLU will have 16 panels, with four to eight sections in each panel.
Each section is created by friends and relatives of those who died, as a tribute to their lives. Some sections include pictures, dolls and other items that reflect the life of the person.
“The quilt is like a window into people’s lives,” Latour said. “Once you see it, you’ll never forget it.”
Linda Wardhammar, associate director of Student Life and Greek adviser, said, “Just watching it . walking through it, you learn about these people and their lives.”
The sections on display at SLU were chosen to reflect the student body and the surrounding community.
Viewing the quilt is free. Any donations will go to St. Louis Effort for AIDS to care for people living with HIV/AIDS in the area.
