Members of the Student Activities Board elected their executives for the 2001-2002 school year Tuesday. Those elected were Erin Dunn (the current internal Vice President), President, Mike Noce, Vice President of Public Relations, Cheryl Coleman, Vice President of Finance, Pat Basile, Internal Vice President, and incumbent, Mike Rozier held his position as Vice President of Research and Development.
“We are all definitely excited,” said VP-Elect Basile. His emotion seemed to speak for all of the newly elected members, who were proudly wearing their SAB t-shirts Wednesday afternoon while discussing who had passes for the prescreening of New Line Cinema’s latest film, Blow.
This movie is just one event in a long list of programs that SAB would like to continue into next year. “We have had a lot of success this year and hope to carry it over into next year,” said President-Elect Dunn.
With an increasing budget for the next school year, SAB hopes to hold more and better events than this year.
The group felt a budget cut of 26% ($90,000 to 66,000) this year and has found itself working with other student organizations, such as KSLU and the SGA, in order to successfully produce events for students.
“Co-sponsorships are good,” said Dunn, “we like working with others, but we hope to stand on our own a few times next year.”
After the success of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones concert last year, and Wyclef Jean last fall, the group would like to host another large show next year.
Unfortunately, the future of the prescreening films is unclear though.
NET (Net Event Theater), the company which allows students to see the prescreening of major motion pictures appears to have an unlikely future ahead, leaving many universities unsure.
SAB is still looking to recruit more members for the next year as well.
It has been reaching out to SLU’s next class of students at Marvelous Mondays, SLU 101, and just recently at Future Freshman Weekend. There are currently 41 members on the board, and the group is hoping to expand in the future.
Future events for SAB include a possible viewing of Columbia Picture’s A Knight’s Tale, at the Tivoli, in the University City Loop, and “Four Days of Fun in 2001.” This is begins on Tuesday, April 24, with a Great Issues panel, then is followed by comedian, Jimmy Fallon, anchor of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. Friday of that week, Spring Fever is kicked off.
This carnival-like event closes Laclede St. for a day where rides, student-sponsored booths, and bands help students unwind before finals.
The newly elected officials take office on April 28 and hold them for until next year.
