This week’s Homecoming flurry continues, giving students a seemingly endless list of activities. Planned by the Student Activities Board, the festivities are planned for Monday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 29, when the week will end with a fireworks display.
One of the week’s most prominent events featured a concert by Better Than Ezra held on Laclede Avenue next to the Billiken Sports Complex. Tonight, hypnotist Tom Deluca will be performing in the Saint Louis Room in the Busch Memorial Center at 9 p.m.
His act involves taking students out of the crowd and making them perform hilarious acts they would not normally do.
Later tonight, at 11:30 p.m., students can attend a pep rally and bonfire at the parking lot located at the corner of Laclede and Vandeventer Avenues, across from the Village Apartments.
This bonfire may worry some after the tragedy at Texas A&M two years ago, but SAB President Erin Dunn has worked with the Department of Public Safety to ensure the safety of the students and onlookers.
“The fire will be five feet by five feet, so there will be nothing to worry about,” said Dunn.
On Friday night, the Homecoming dance will be held at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom at Union Station from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $10 and are available in the Office of Student Life in the upper level of the BMC.
On Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m., students can join in a tailgate party and beer garden with a valid ID. Students and alumni can watch the Golf Cart Parade go by from Boland Plaza starting at 5:30 p.m. This parade has grown in popularity over the years.
“We have ordered about 40 golf carts,” said Dunn, “but we will have to order more with the amount of requests we are receiving.”
At this event, alumni, students, faculty and staff may all design a golf cart and drive it down the University. Later that evening, the men’s soccer team will take on new Conference USA rival, the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. After the game a fireworks display will be held, capping the end of Homecoming week.
