Students with an interest in being a part of the college radio community have ample opportunity to do so. KSLU, Saint Louis University’s campus radio station, has a calendar full of events this semester.
Last night, KSLU kicked off the year with a welcome back dance party by the pools outside Simon Recreation Center. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., students danced to music and learned more about the radio station.
“More students are listening to the station than we think,” said Ron Parres, the general manager of KSLU.
This Friday, Sept. 7, KSLU hosts a concert in the Quad from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Centro-Matic will play to a free audience. Alcoholic beverages will be served to anyone with proper identification.
Last year, Centro-Matic opened for the Old 97s concert hosted by KSLU. “A lot of people like Centro-Matic better than Old 97s,” said Kyle Torretta, a representative of the station.
KSLU broadcasts on cable channel 12 all day long. New programs with student Disc Jockeys begin on September 17th.

One of the biggest focuses this year is to increase the student listening population. DJs will be encouraged to make flyers promoting their show, their type of music and what time they will be on air.
Parres said that the SLU listening audience is more varied than what the radio has to offer. “The SLU audience is bound to be fed up with commercial radio,” he said. “Every radio on the FM dial plays the same songs three times an hour-and they’re not even good songs.”
Parres stressed that one of the purposes of KSLU is to provide a service to the students. “Any student organization can provide information for a screen or spoken
