Saint Louis University’s recently released Campus Crime Report stated that SLU has the lowest number of any serious crimes reported of all major colleges in Missouri. Nevertheless, the Department of Public Safety and the Student Government Association are not satisfied.
Recent efforts have been made to place a system of cameras that would monitor students walking from Reinert Hall to the main campus.
One incident, where a gun was pointed out of a car toward students, has been reported in the last year. Efforts are being made to make the two-block stretch safer.
The strip in question includes the sidewalk in front of Reinert, crossing Forest Park Blvd, across the Shell station, to Laclede Ave.
“We want to make people feel safer,” said Jack Titone, director of DPS.
Titone had previously heard the request for the cameras from Student Government Association Arts and Sciences Senator Mike Rozier.
However, the two new cameras, one which will be placed on the carport at Reinert, facing north, the other near the Laclede garage, have not yet been approved by the University.
“We are waiting to get the plan approved,” said Titone, “but would like to place the second camera on one of the corner post on Grand.”
The placing of the second camera brings into question whether or not it will have an effect on the University.
However, Titone pointed out several ways to disguise cameras on the corner post holding the camera. One example is the mirror-like bubbles cameras that are placed in at casinos and grocery stores.
According to Titone, the extra cameras will not be costly for the University. “We currently monitor the Fordham (Reinert) lot, so the system is already there,” said Titone.
The extra cost for one camera would be approximately $500. The plan was recommended by SGA, Titone noted.
“It was a good recommendation, and we are following through with it,” he said.
