Juniors and seniors may remember the days of the short-lived campus pub, which existed in the Billiken Club for approximately six weeks in the spring of 2000.
“It was a failed attempt and a lesson learned,” said Director of Student Life Phil Lyons. “It was a cafeteria that happened to serve hot dogs and pizza at noon and longneck Budweisers at 5 p.m.”
The pub was setup in the center of the Billiken Club using a few tables and table skirts. It was maintained by Sodexho food services. The bar was open Tuesday through Friday from 5 p.m. till Midnight.
“It didn’t have the atmosphere that students wanted,” said Lyons.
Lyons noted that the pub did will when events were programmed in the building or in the pub, but when there were no events, the pub was poorly attended.
During its tenure, Student Activites Board and KSLU hosted several comedian nights, local band nights and the NCAA Billikens game. These events often packed the Billiken Club.
However, at other times, Lyons said most students would rather just have studied in the Billiken Club.
This pub was not the first on campus.
Back in 1981, today’s Daily Grind was used as a student pub. After a few years, with tighter enforcement, the pub fell out of use.
From 1992-1996, many SAB-sponsored events were held in the Reinert Lounge, which had been a former hotel bar and lounge. At those events, Marriott Dining Services would often provide alcoholic beverages.
After 1996, many SAB events started to be held in the Busch Memorial Center, ending the days of the Reinert Pub Nights.
With the BMC being renovated, the possibility of a bar and grill has been suggested, but not yet determined.
