Once again spring has sprung, and with the season comes the cleaning and the repairs. So get out those mops and buckets, paint and brushes, shovels and hoes, put on those comfy, ragged old clothes and join in a day of cleaning and service in the St. Louis community.
Showers of Service: SLU Spring into Action, sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, is a campus-wide service event, taking place Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m.
Volunteers will be sent out to various sites in and around the St. Louis community, with the bulk of the projects being outside. Projects will consists of outdoor work, house rehabilitation, gardening, painting and cleaning lots. Participants are required to wear work clothes, long pants and long sleves, as well as closed-toed shoes.
The event will kick off in Koenig Plaza at 8 a.m. where all participants will receive a T-shirt and breakfast before being sent out to their services sites.
APO hopes the service event will turn out to be as successful as SLU Make A Difference Day, only on a smaller scale, and become an annual spring day of service event at Saint Louis University.
“Showers of Service is APO’s attempt as an organization to try and make an impact year round and not just in the fall,” said Dan Schneidermeier, president of APO. “As one of the largest student organizations on campus, it is our goal to share the wealth of our membership and our time for the betterment of the SLU campus and the St. Louis Community.”
APO believes this day-of-service event is a great opportunity for students, faculty and staff to donate their time and to be of service to others in the community.
The volunteer sign-up drive begins today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Quad I. The drive runs through Wednesday, March 27.
In the case of rain, the sign-up table will be moved from Quad I to the lower level of Busch Memorial Center.
Anyone wanting to participate in the service event can sign up individually, with a group of friends, organizations or even residence hall floor. Volunteers can sign-up after Easter break, but APO prefers that they sign up during the drive.
“Shower of Service will be a great opportunity for the entire SLU community to become involved in spring service,” said Jessica Obergas, co-chair of the Showers of Service.
