Farmclub compilation lacks

The one-sheet accompanying this dismal compilation is quite shocking.

“Farmclub was visionary, ambitious, innovative and unquestionably the edgiest live music series in television history,” it says. Well, not exactly. Farmclub was a good idea that didn’t work. Dreamt up by moguls (Jimmy Iovine and Doug Morris) and hosted by wags (Matt Pinfield and Ali Landry), Farmclub aimed to be a musical empire that served bands and fans alike.

It was also a record label and Web site offering anyone their chance to upload a demo in hopes of becoming that next big thing. If lucky, bands would find themselves playing alongside U2, Wyclef Jean and At the Drive In.

The fact that Farmclub is defunct after just a year is a telling fact. Still don’t believe us? Then take a listen to Sev or Bionic Jive, who are the two “discoveries” included on the Farmclub compilation. Then you’ll know why even the USA Network pulled the plug.

Chock full of sports-metal and barking hip-hop, the rest of the disc sucks too. The band that has the lead singer who looks like a cocker spaniel, Nickelback, has a song on Farmclub. Nelly, Staind, DMX, and Mya do, too. “What’s the difference between me and you?” asks Ja Rule. It’s probably the fact that none of us will own Live and Unreleased anytime soon. Amid the noisy noise, there are a few moments of clarity. The excellent “And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead” contributes a mammoth “Richter Scale Madness.” How fitting that the song is about killing everyone.

Perhaps they were talking about everyone else on this compilation. N.W.A.’s take on “Nuthin’ But A `G’ Thang” also scores some points, as does “The Real Slim Shady” from Eminem. With genius lyrics and masterful timing, this is what hip-hop sounds like when it’s done well. Aside from the three gems, this Farmclub business is a brutal and ugly mess. Give it to people who think Limp Bizkit is “phat” and they’ll think you’re “dope.” Really, it’s that bad. Grade: D+
