The name may have changed, but it’s still them.
Firstar Bank officially changed its name to U.S. Bank on March 1, 2002, following the purchase of U.S. Bank by Firstar.
According to Debbie Henry, branch manager of U.S. Bank at Saint Louis University, the decision to adopt the U.S. Bank name was based on the name recognition it had in the western United States. She said that Firstar is best known in the upper Midwest and East Coast.
With the purchase of U.S. Bank, Firstar was able to expand into 24 states, up from Firstar’s holdings in just 14 states prior to the purchase.
Henry assures students that their ATM cards will work in any ATM labeled Firstar or U.S. Bank. She said students with accounts here at SLU should be receiving new ATM cards with the U.S. Bank logo during the next few weeks.
Henry also said that students will see no change in their account terms or account numbers.
Name changes are nothing new for the St. Louis area. In August 2000, Mercantile Bank changed its name to Firstar after a buyout. U.S. Bank, owned by U.S. Bancorp, now operates 2,186 offices with 4,937 branded ATMs.
Henry looks forward to having a bigger space in the renovated Busch Memorial Center, as it “gets quite busy on payday.”
She said she has not been informed where the bank will be relocated to during the renovation process.
