A weekend full of cultural events is coming to Saint Louis University. This weekend, March 22 and 23, SLU hosts the Sangam Indian Cultural Show and La Fiesta Tropical.
The third annual Sangam Indian Cultural Show, titled “Chance of a Lifetime . One Boy, One Girl, One Chance,” will be at Xavier Auditorium. Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are on sale for $7 or $8, depending on the seat.
Tickets can be purchased daily in the lower level of the Busch Memorial Center next to the Billiken Club food court.
Sangam, presented by the Indian-Asian Student Association, is hosting an after-party at Laclede’s Street Bar & Grill following the Saturday show.
Admission is free for all persons with a ticket stub from either the Friday or Saturday show.
The Sangam show, boasting “Indian culture immersed in theatric comedy,” was voted Best Performance at SLU for the last two consecutive years.
“The idea for the show began simply as a manner in which to show the diversity that exists on campus,” said Ankur Shah, president of Sangam-IASA. “As the organization began to grow in size we felt the need to promote it across the campus.”
Students should expect to see elements of a completely different culture, Shah said. “The general layout of the show is a comedic play and throughout the play there will be dances, fashion shows and songs interspersed,” he continued. “It’s going to be educational, but students should also expect to have a good time.”
Students interested in attending are in luck, as tickets remain available. However, Shah expects both nights to sell out.
“We’ve sold out the show each night it has been performed in years past and there’s no reason to think otherwise this year,” he said.
To buy tickets, students should stop by the lower level of the BMC between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. or email [email protected]. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
But Sangam is not the only cultural event this weekend.
La Fiesta Tropical, a Latin dance, will be Friday night from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Latin American and Caribbean Coalition and the Black Student Alliance will host the event.
The annual dance will feature Latin and Calypso music from the Latin band La Solucion Latina and a Latin DJ Cesar Cardona.
Even students not familiar with Latin dance can attend. Dance lessons will be offered from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Students interested in attending La Fiesta Tropical dance can purchase tickets in advance in the Student Life Office, on the upper level of the BMC, for $5. Tickets will also be available at the door for $7.
