Like the theme song to Friends? If so, you’ll love the latest offering from the Goo Goo Dolls. If not, you’ll love knowing that you aren’t a wag.
The Goo Goo Dolls are easy to loathe, but it hasn’t always been this way. Way back when, they once contributed a half-decent cover of “Bitch” to the No Alternative benefit compilation, employing the incredible Lance Diamond to contribute his freight train-like vocals. We never actually heard Johnny Rzeznik sing, you see. Then came “Name.” Then came “Iris.” Then came the disappointment.
For behind all of that early rock posturing, we found that the trio was really a sappy, MOR pop band, owing more to peers Matchbox Twenty than to the Rolling Stones.
Thankfully, though, ideas seem to be running out, and dry-as-a-bone lead single “Here Is Gone,” is reportedly failing on modern rock radio. “I can feel you falling/I know it’s out there,” sings Rzeznik. Essentially, a premonition for what the future’s got in store for this miserable band.
Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
