The Student Government Association is currently accepting nominations for the Annual Advocacy Awards of the Association.
SGA distributes three awards every year to members of the Saint Louis University community – the Joseph F. Hodes Student of the Year Award, the Mary A. Bruemmer Award and the George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award.
The Joseph F. Hodes Student of the Year Award is presented to “the student who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to student life and the excellence of the Saint Louis University experience, in the spirit of our mission and identity as a Jesuit institution,” as stated on SGA’s Web site.
Last year’s recipient of the Joseph F. Hodes Student of the Year Award was the then-current SGA President Jay Perry.
According to SGA’s Web site, the Mary A. Bruemmer Award is “presented to any member of the Saint Louis University community for outstanding service to Student Life.” Avis Meyer, a professor in the Communication Department, received the Mary A. Bruemmer Award last year.
“The Bruemmer Award is a wonderful, memorable award for two reasons,” Meyer said. “One-it is named after Mary Bruemmer, a stalwart soul on this campus for the better part of the 20th century, and two-the students choose the recipient, and they are the reason we are here,” Meyer said.
SGA’s Web site stated that the George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award is presented “to an individual whose actions have proven to further the advancement of the City of St. Louis and Saint Louis University, embodying the ideal of the Jesuit call to be `men and women for others.'” Last year, this honor was awarded to Kathleen Brady, the vice president of Facilities Management and Civic Affairs.
Nominations for the Joseph F. Hodes Student of the Year Award can be submitted at http://sga.slu.edu/soy.shtml. The Mary A. Bruemmer Award nominations can be submitted at http://sga.slu.edu/mb.shtml, and nominations for the George D. Wendel Civic Leadership Award can be submitted at http://sga.slu.edu/gdwc.shtml.
All three award nominations require a 250-word essay describing the reason why the nominee is deserving of the award. The deadline for all nominations is Friday, April 12.
Erin Kohne, a senior studying communication, thinks that these awards are a wonderful idea.
“I think these awards are beneficial because they acknowledge the hard work individuals dedicate to creating a more unified Saint Louis University and a prosperous city of St. Louis. The individuals receiving these awards deserve a great deal of recognition for their efforts,” Kohne said.
