Watch more MTV for freedom’s sake

Adolf Hitler attempted to create his Aryan nation by controlling the media, only allowing what he approved to be broadcast and distributed. We as Americans should have absolutely no time for the fascists around us who attempt to burglarize us of our freedoms. Namely, these bogus patriots are those denouncing our society’s selection of music, particularly our selection of popular music.

Music is blood embodied into society. Music seamlessly coexists within every person, spirit, community and bloc of humanity. It exists in celebration and community just as vibrantly as it resonates with the isolated and oppressed. In the most universal sense, music is the vehicle through which we as a human race are able to express and communicate the state in which our minds, hearts and spirits live. This river runs deep.

To deny the merit or substance of a given song or artist is to deny the humanity of those creating and receiving it. All too often we find ourselves critiquing what is defined as “popular music” and “independent music.” Why is pop music smeared for being popular and independent music championed for being anonymous? Which voice, if either, is a more effective form of communication? Has the debate become a frivolous, moot point? What is “selling out?” When does an underground bubble of sound “pop” open and become mainstream? Why do people get upset if their pet band signs to a major label?

Music is a mouthpiece, communicating the guilt and innocence of life. Songs are sung by ordinary people for ordinary people. There is no subliminal messaging. A pop-sensation is only a star because the people made him such. The power of media rests with the people.

Anyone who is anyone is tired of hearing musical louts spouting their mouths off, preaching on the evils of MTV, and arguing that Clear Channel Communications is killing Radio. These claims are vain.

Why is popular music popular? Don’t stress, child. It is because the plurality of society enjoys listening to it. Nobody forces you to listen or to watch this media. The so called “independent music scene” is revered because it exercises a freedom that certain American pop culture critics claim but do not exercise. Through inherent democracy, we as a people have a right to support any given band or singer to the point of them becoming superstars.

In a democracy, we patriots believe and respect the majority rule. We have our own tastes. We do not defame the tastes, preferences and experiences of others. MTV is as American as apple pie. I love everything MTV represents. It celebrates what we as a nation embody. Remember, the people control this nation. The people are the government. The people are the media and are represented by the media. If you don’t agree with the rule of the majority, do what every true flag-waver should do–express your freedom of choice. Bashing Dave Matthews’ or Nelly’s success does absolutely nothing. The people chose it. To slander the mainstream is to violate our freedom, our first Amendment Right. We the people elect public officials just as readily as we elect our pop stars.

Independent music is married to popular music. They cannot be divorced. They cannot receive annulments. The celebration of pop music is as patriotic as the celebration of independent music. Don’t let the terrorists win. Don’t plant the seeds that Hitler attempted to sow. Practice Americanism. Apply freedom. Celebrate our pop icons just as ardently as you groom your favorite band.

Anything else would be un-American.
