This Sunday, Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the second annual Neighborhood Festival will take place at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Laclede Avenue.
The event was started a few years ago and is currently co-chaired by Alderman Michael McMillan and features Sal Martinez as the Vashon/JeffVanderLou Initiative executive director. In cooperation with Saint Louis University, the event is an effort to bring together various surrounding communities, including JeffVanderLou, Midtown and Covenant Place.
Joe Davenport, director of Artist Promotion with the Platinum Group, sees this as a way to “try to empower constituents.”
The festival will serve host to a multitude of information to members of the St. Louis community, such as health-care information, music, food and fun for children. Davenport cites that the festival will have “something for everyone,” noting the tours of the Covenant Place and other new neighborhoods, as well as information on the armed services and an “entertainment piece.”
SLU offers the event a perfect venue, being a major university located in Midtown, said Davenport. He also said this gives SLU community empowerment in addition to exposure.
The festival is intended to be a way for several communities to see what opportunities and resources are available to them, as well as to recognize the efforts of those who have helped the area progress.
