As the saying goes, “No matter how small, you too can make a difference.” Saint Louis University believes that each person counts. Each person is important. Each person makes a difference.
The fifth annual SLU Make a Difference Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26. The event will kickoff at the Robert Hermann stadium where the Bare Naked Statues will perform, followed by keynote speaker Carol Buck, widow of late Jack Buck.
This year’s goal for Make a Difference Day is “2002 volunteers in 2002.” Approximately 1,200 participants have already signed up. The center realizes that the goal is difficult but thinks that it can be attained, said Abi Ottenberg, Center for Leadership and Community Service intern.
The national service day at Saint Louis University also kicks off a number of other activities aimed at reaching out to the community throughout the year. Make a Difference Day is part of a nationwide effort to help those in need. Throughout the day, groups of participants will assist a number of charitable organizations in the St. Louis area. This year there are more than 65 agencies that students, faculty, staff and the community will help to make a difference. Agencies this year include Blumeyer and Adam’s Park Community Centers, Habitat for Humanity, Women’s Safe House, Campus Kitchen, Forest Park Forever and many more.
SLU’s annual food drive also kicks off on Make a Difference Day. A number of students will be collecting canned goods throughout the community. The University will host Homeward Bound on Oct. 26 at Simon Recreation Center. Homeward Bound is a resource day for homeless individuals in the area that includes informational booths, medical testing and other useful assistance.
This year, in an effort to boost attendance at the event there is a challenge between the residence halls floors as well as the departments.
The Center For Leadership and Community Service will be awarding tickets and box amenities for a Billiken basketball game this winter to the residence hall floor and department that has the highest percentage of participation for Make A Difference Day.
“The challenge helps to build community and school spirit,” Ottenberg said. “It’s a good-hearted competition.”
The ultimate goal of Make a Difference Day each year is to inspire people through the one-day service that they really can make a difference–thus hoping that one goes out and continues service in the community after that day.
SLU Make a Difference Day is sponsored by the Center for Leadership and Community Service, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and KMOX Radio.
