Those who plan on lounging around Saturday afternoon pretending to accomplish some sort of work may want to consider participating in an activity a bit more meaningful: the Fall Leadership Conference.
Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Cook Hall, the Center for Leadership and Community Service will be hosting a conference titled, “Making Good Leaders Great.”
According to Caroline Heckman, coordinator of Student Leadership Services, the motto this year reflects the belief that all students at Saint Louis University are leaders, and in order to fully exercise their leadership abilities they need to be made more aware of how they can contribute to their college community.
Throughout the day, students will hear from two keynote speakers: Laura Davis, a consultant for High Impact Training, and Shawn Swinigan, director of Residence Life. Davis and Swinigan will each present their own approach to leadership development.
Other activities planned for the day include three breakout sessions, each 50 minutes in length. Students will have the opportunity to choose among 12 different topics, including: time management, marketing involvement for internships and employers, team building, and becoming a resident assistant.
Junior Janelle Densberger attended the conference last year. “I really liked how the breakout sessions not only were useful in terms of leadership, but also useful to us as college students in relation to the business world,” Densberger said.
Last year was the first time that SLU held such a conference, and Heckman had the job of creating the entire event. This year a student committee of seven individuals has been formed, a group which Heckman said has been “extremely helpful.”
Previous attendee Densberger has served as the publicity co-chair on this committee and has assembled registration sheets, designed the T-shirts which will be distributed to all students in attendance and compiled the program for the conference.
One hundred sixty-five students are currently expected to attend the leadership conference. Maximum capacity is 200. Students interested in attending should call Caroline Heckman at 977-2801.
