Students unclear about which classes to register for might find help from the Student Government Association Registration Fair next Wednesday in the Griesedieck Complex lobby.
“All of the classes I take, I take on the recommendations of other people,” said Lubna Alam, academic vice president of SGA. For this reason, she thought a registration fair would serve the same purpose for other students, particularly underclassmen.
In the lobby, students who are majoring in various departments will be present to give advice about courses and professors within their major.
Alam will be giving some guidelines to the students recommending courses: “Do not just say, ‘This is an easy class.’ Tell them what classes are thought-provoking and interesting.”
She emphasized, “It will not be teacher-bashing.”
As this is the first attempt at something like this, Alam chose to focus solely on the Arts & Sciences core classes, with representatives from biology, chemistry, English, history, French, German, Spanish, philosophy, political science, psychology, theology and math.
With many freshmen now in Griesedieck and Marguerite halls and fewer upperclassmen and to give advice, Alam said this should specifically help them.
“It is primarily geared toward freshmen and underclassmen, but it will be useful to everyone,” Alam said, noting that it will also be a good opportunity for students to find out more about the departments they may be declaring for a major.
Academic Services, which recently began a new peer-mentor program, will have a table of peer mentors at the fair showing freshmen how to use Webstar to register.
Alam advised that students be sure to confirm any registration decision with their adviser.
