Burbs debut new mall

Looking for gift ideas? Need a change of scene? Want a totally different shopping experience? If you think you’re shopped out, fear not.

The West County Mall, a Westfield Shoppingtown, located at the intersection of Interstate 270 and Manchester in Des Peres offers everything. Since its 20-month, $237 million redevelopment and its subsequent grand opening in September, the mall has been packed with tons of events involving local radio and TV stations.

Though some may get discouraged at the mall’s vast selection of specialty stores, many will find the classy atmosphere quite pleasant.

Aside from popular stores seen at the Galleria and others, the mall offers new ones exclusive to the St. Louis area, such as Guess, Innerself, United Colors of Benetton, Adrienne Vittadini and the first Nordstrom in Missouri. There is also a food court offering steaks, pasta and Japanese cuisine, among other choices.

Macintosh enthusiasts will be quite delighted with the only Apple store in St. Louis. The Apple Store has a Genius Bar, where people can get advice about their Macs, as well as the iMovie area, where they can make and edit their own movies.

Galyan’s Sports and Outdoor Adventure, also the first in St. Louis, wows customers with 83,000 square feet of space and a massive selection of sports merchandise at reasonable prices.

Each department is represented by associates who are enthusiasts of their particular sport. Customers can also scale a 43-foot rock-climbing wall, the largest in St. Louis, for free.

The mall offers a variety of Christmas treats for the holidays as well.

Walk through the mall and see how trees are decorated around the world. Watch kids eagerly waiting for a chance to sit with Santa. Gaze up at a 20-foot man on stilts as he spreads holiday cheer. Listen to a variety of special performances, which included a solo singer and a violin concerto by high school students last week.

The mall also sponsors cause-related events throughout the holiday. Talk radio station 550 KTRS broadcasted live from the mall on Friday as part of their campaign to collect toys for the United Way.

On Saturday, The United Service Organization held a card-signing event for customers to write letters to men and women in the military. 101.1 The River and Fox Channel 2 will each hold their toy drives this December.

The West County Mall has something for everyone, especially this holiday … so go eat, shop and be merry.
