Ice skating in the city

Why trudge through the ice when you can glide over it?

This holiday season, treat yourself and your friends to one of the most popular winter recreations around–ice skating!

St. Louis is home to several indoor and two outdoor ice rinks. One of the outdoor rinks is in Shaw Park on Brentwood Boulevard, located less than two miles north of the Saint Louis Galleria. Named after Charles Shaw, a banker and real estate developer who became mayor of Clayton in the ’30s, the Shaw Park ice rink has been a destination for ice skaters since 1961. It has also been a practice ground for youth hockey teams from all over the St. Louis area.

The Shaw Park ice rink operates from Nov. 22 to March 4. Public skating times vary according to hockey team practice schedules, but they are just right if you would like to explore other possibilities in the metro area. The rink’s proximity to Clayton’s diverse range of restaurants offers skaters a tempting invitation after a skating session.

Admission for nonresident adults is $3.75 and $2.25 for students. The Shaw Park rink also offers birthday party packages–room, tables, chairs and admission for up for 20 people–for only $50. For more details, call 290-8519.

Much closer to campus is the Steinberg Memorial Skating Rink in Forest Park, near the Kingshighway exit on Highway 40. The rink has been a popular mainstay since it opened in 1957.

Its construction was realized through a large donation from the Steinberg Charitable Trust, as well as from St. Louis city funds. It was commissioned by Etta Steinberg in memory of her husband Mark C. Steinberg, an investment broker born in St. Louis. It is now being managed by Ken and Lori Cowan.

The Steinberg Memorial Skating Rink operates from mid-November to mid-March. It is one of the largest outdoor rinks in the nation. It accommodates up to thousands of skaters a day during the holidays, especially during busy Friday or Saturday nights.

Since the rink is located in Forest Park, the surroundings of the rink offer winter scenery that creates a beautiful atmosphere to enjoy for a day or night of ice skating.

The rink underwent a $1.4 million renovation in 2000, which included replacement of pipes, cooling system and resurfacing of the ice. Additional improvements were made on the lights, sound system and the outside surroundings.

Skating fee is $4 per three-hour session, and skate rental is $1.

Both rinks operate at designated times, weather permitting.
