Crime on the Campus of Saint Louis University over break was relatively non-existent. However, there were two reported incidents–an auto theft and a burglary. There were no car break-ins occurring on campus over the holidays.
On Christmas Eve a burglary occurred in the Village Apartments. There was no forced entry as the victim left their patio door unlocked and their laptop computer was taken. On Dec. 27 a student’s vehicle was stolen from the St. Joseph’s Parking Lot. The vehicle was later recovered.
“During the last three weeks, there has been [virtually] no crime on our parking lots,” said Jack Titone, Director of the Department of Public Safety. ” In light of the increase in stolen autos this year, the Department of Public Safety thought it would be beneficial to our students to park in the garages if they were leaving their vehicles on campus when they went home during the winter break.”
Even with the absence of students, DPS still had to monitor campus safety and provide security for employees over the winter break.
This semester DPS will continue to deploy additional patrols on all University parking lots and monitor areas where students frequently walk, said Titone.
In addition the department plans to provide the University Community with more crime prevention speaking engagements. DPS will also continue to work with the Student Government Association/Public Safety advisory committee in developing a partnership concerning the security and safety on campus.
The Ninth District of the St. Louis Police Department recently changed the boundaries of their police district, now patrolling both Frost and Health Science campuses
“Saint Louis University is very safe, however, everyone needs to take ownership of their own safety,” said Titone.
