Summer housing options on campus will be limited more than years past, with only Marguerite Hall being designated as student housing this summer.
Shawn Swinigan, director of Residence Life, explained that the need to renovate many of the apartment complexes, as well as the difficulty in preparing housing for the school year, led to the decision. That decision, he noted, is still being reviewed, and a final decision will be reached by next week.
The list of possible repairs includes painting and carpeting in Grand Forest Apartments, general maintenance and renovation to Marchetti Towers and some carpet replacement in the Village Apartments.
As in previous years, Saint Louis University Event Services controls several residence halls and apartments during the summer for hosting conferences. This year, the Village will once again be set aside for that use.
Swinigan said that many students moving into Marchetti last fall complained that the apartments were not cleaned properly due to summer housing tenants.
With all apartments closed during the summer, they could be better prepared for fall move-in, Swinigan explained.
In an e-mail to all residents on campus, the Department of Housing and Residence Life announced the housing arrangements, noting that dining and food options on campus would be one concern during the summer.
“Students may eat in the Fusz Food Court or utilize the community kitchen in Marguerite Hall,” the e-mail said.
Swinigan said that additional options for cooking and storing food were being considered.
Last year, students working on campus or taking classes could live in Marchetti West. The year prior, students lived in the Village Apartments. The year before, Notre Dame Hall and Marchetti West were available.
Costs to reside in Marguerite for the summer will be $157.50 per week for a single and $111.00 per week for a double. Swinigan added that Marguerite actually has more singles available than Marchetti West did last year.
Approximately 50 to 55 staff positions are available with the department or event services, and staff will receive free housing and minimum wage.
Swinigan said that his department has not yet heard any complaints about the summer housing options.
For those seeking off-campus apartments, Swinigan said the department has information and can help with that search.
