The Institute of Jesuit Sources, after 25 years in its location in Fusz Hall, has been asked to leave by April of next year.
Institute Director John Padberg, S.J., explained that the lease agreement with the University allows for the termination of the lease if the University feels it needs the space, so long as a one-year notice is given. The Institute is currently in its third year of a five-year lease.
Filling approximately 4,700 square feet of space on the second floor of Fusz for offices and another 1,800 square feet for storage in the basement, the Institute has been quite comfortable in its space, Padberg said. He added, “I’m grateful we were here. I would obviously prefer to stay here.”
No reason was given to Padberg for the termination of the lease next year. University officials were not available for comment.
The Institute for Jesuit Sources, which is run by the Missouri Province of Jesuits, works to make English translations available of the source material on the history and spirituality of the Society of Jesus, Padberg explained. The Institute also publishes translations and original English versions of other scholarly materials and popular studies of the Jesuits.
During its 42-year history, the Institute has “become an international source for material on the Society of Jesus,” Padberg said, noting that it has published 92 books ranging from 500 to 75,000 copies.
Padberg said the Institute has begun looking for a new location near campus but not on University-owned property.
