On Thursday, Oct. 23 in the Saint Louis Room of the Busch
Student Center, the Melody of Praise Gospel Ensemble (MOPGE)
presented Letting our Light Shine Before Men to Saint Louis
University alumni, current students and guests.
The performance was comparable to a worship service, and
audience participation was encouraged by clapping, singing and
dancing to the music.
The night began with a Bible reading and prayer by members of
the MOPGE. De-Andrea Blaylock, a former leader of the MOPGE,
welcomed guests and the show commenced.
With lit candles in hand, the MOPGE entered the room as they
sang their first piece, “Keep Your Lamps.” The music ranged from
slow tempos and acapella songs to fast-paced gospel tempos
accompanied by various instruments.
The MOPGE has 32 choir members; eight of whom are executive
board members. A drummer also accompanies the MOPGE on many of the
selections.
In addition to the MOPGE, the concert included performances by
special guests: Tianis Hill and New Testament.
The MOPGE welcomes people of all singing ranges and talents, but
it does take dedication.
Many of the choir members have extensive backgrounds in singing
and music. To expand on these talents, students joined the
MOPGE.
“I used to sing in the gospel choir at my church, so I decided
to sing here as another way of getting involved,” Dominique
Gonzales , a freshman in MOPGE said.
