Anyone who has walked through the Busch Student Center lately
may have noticed a group of people putting down their books and
picking up their knitting needles.
Every Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m., students meet in the BSC to
learn how to knit.
This group began when Melanie Briscoe, a staff member with Saint
Louis University’s Methodist Campus Ministry, decided earlier in
the semester that she would enjoy teaching students the craft of
knitting.
However, Briscoe will not be returning until January, as she is
on maternity leave: Until she gets back, students in the club are
running it themselves.
The members can teach inquiring students the basics of knitting,
and then if one is interested in creating complex pieces such as
blankets or sweaters, they may have to wait until Briscoe
returns.
The members of the club assure that basic knitting techniques
take approximately 20 minutes to learn and that it is very easy to
grasp the methods.
“I learned in a few weeks,” said Evangeline Harvey, a student
member.
In addition to learning something new, the club also offers free
materials to use for one’s individual knitting.
The needles and yarn are supplied, but if a member chooses to
keep the item he or she made, there is a $10 charge for
supplies.
Members will record e-mail addresses of new members so they can
send additional information. For any questions about the knitting
club, students can e-mail Harvey at [email protected].
The knitting club can be found on the first floor of the
BSC.
