Members of the University community will join in making a
difference with others throughout the nation on Saturday, Oct. 25
in honor of national Make a Difference Day. Saint Louis University
will host its sixth annual day of serving and making a difference
to others and the St. Louis community.
The event kicks off at Robert R. Hermann Stadium with a
performance by the Bare Naked Statues. Ozzie Smith, former St.
Louis Cardinal shortstop and Golden Glove award winner, will send
volunteers off to service with words of inspiration.
“Ozzie was chosen because we believed that he would be a great
source of motivation and inspiration to our volunteers, considering
his great presence within the St. Louis community,” said Abi
Ottenberg, Center for Leadership and Community Service intern.
Make a Difference Day is an encompassing national day of helping
others–a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. The day’s
ultimate goal is to inspire people through the one-day service that
they really can make a difference–thus hoping that one goes out
and continues service in the community.
Throughout the day, volunteers will give their time at a number
of social service agencies in St. Louis and the surrounding area.
Students, faculty and staff will be making a difference at more
than 70 sites. Agencies benefiting from the volunteer efforts this
year include the Grand Rock, Salvation Army Harbor of Lights,
Blumeyer and Adam’s Park Community Center, KidSmart, Tower Village
and Campus Kitchen, to name a few.
Last year, more than 1,800 students, faculty and staff came out
to make a difference; our goal this year is 2,500 volunteers, said
Ottenberg.
