The recycling program that was passed by Saint Louis
University’s Student Government Association last spring will come
into full motion in the forthcoming weeks.
“SGA is ready to go with recycling. The trash room containers
are here, and we have the publicity prepared. We’re waiting for the
official start date from the housing department,” said Joey Kneer,
a senator for the College of Public Service. Kneer is working on
this project with the SGA’s Committee for Civic Affairs and
Facility Concerns.
The receptacles will be placed in all of the residence hall
trash rooms, the Village Apartments alley, behind the Marchetti
Towers and behind the Grand Forest Apartments.
There will also be recycling containers placed by all of the
Dumpsters.
Recycling bins will be available for three different types of
recycling: commingling for plastics, glass, tin and aluminum; paper
1 (for school paper and office paper); and paper 2 (for newspapers,
magazines and light cardboard).
A bill was presented to the SGA last spring proposing that the
recycling program at SLU should be improved and be made more easily
accessible. Since the programs passage, the project members have
hired the company who will be removing old receptacles and ordering
new containers.
The Senate is not the only organization that is running this
recycling movement on campus.
“We have also been working with Just Earth, and they are going
to help promote and publicize the recycling program when it kicks
off,” Kneer said. The groups have been working in collaboration to
get this program on its feet.
The next phase of this recycling program will be providing
recycling bins in all of the buildings.
