Continuing in the spirit of helping others, Campus Ministry’s
annual food drive, “What You Gave,” ended on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Members of the food-drive committee believe that this year’s
food drive was a success in fulfilling its goals of raising money,
food and awareness in the fight against hunger and poverty.
This year, events were organized with the attempt to get more
individual participation. Throughout the campus, flyers were posted
to educate the community on poverty. One statistic cited that one
in every eight children goes to bed hungry.
As of Wednesday, the total cans collected and amount raised had
yet to be tallied. Campus Ministry is still receiving donations
daily, and the Turkey Trot and Can-a-palooza, big events for the
Food Drive, will take place later this month.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, the Turkey Trot will raise money and
collect canned goods. This will be the cross country team’s sixth
year of holding the Turkey Trot 5K run and 3K walk.
Can-a-palooza, sponsored by the Student Activities Board, will
be held Monday, Nov. 24 at Wackadoo’s. The event begins at 8 p.m.
with student organizations and individual students displaying their
talents in a variety show.
The canned goods will be distributed to local agencies sometime
next week while the monetary donations will be distributed locally,
nationally and internationally at a future date.
“The Food Drive was very successful in terms of involvement as
more student organizations sponsored the events,” said Abigail
Moland, student coordinator. “There were more individuals that
participated this year than in years past.”
