From Marchetti to Marguerite, students have settled into their
on-campus digs for a long semester’s studies (and naps), but they
shouldn’t snuggle in too far. It’s already time to think about
housing for next semester. Students who want to live in on-campus
housing next year must submit applications to the Department of
Housing and Residence Life by Feb. 11, and appointments for
assignments begin on Feb. 16.
The housing process is beginning earlier than usual this year.
Argyle Wade, director of Housing, said that in the past students
have had trouble remembering to turn in applications in the midst
of midterms and spring break.
Returning residents and newcomers need to fill out the housing
application, which is available in the Housing and Residence Life
office and at front desks in residence halls across campus.
However, returning residents and those who are being pulled in
to another person’s apartment or dorm room do not need to attend an
appointment.
Residents who will be displaced by the demolition of the 12
Grand Forest apartment buildings will get priority within Grand
Forest.
If they wish to move out of Grand Forest, however, they will
receive normal priority.
On the evening of Feb. 13, appointments for making other housing
assignments will be posted online. Appointments will be scheduled
every three minutes, and Wade said that he hopes this will keep the
process speedy.
Appointments will be scheduled from Feb. 16 through Feb. 27,
from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 to 5 p.m. on
Friday.
Students must attend the appointment that is assigned to them or
send a roommate to represent them if they are within a group of
students who wish to move in together. Students can also send a
representative in their stead, along with a note giving that
representative permission to make decisions about their
housing.
Missing an appointment entirely forfeits your priority. “We’re
not going to hold a spot for [students who miss their
appointment,]” Wade said. If a student misses their appointment, it
is best to go as soon as possible to the Housing and Residence Life
office. “Typically, if someone misses an appointment, we’ll try to
work them back in,” he added.
Wade cautioned students who will not be attending the
appointments themselves to send someone they trust, as that person
will be able to make the final decision about their housing.
Students who cannot attend their appointment and cannot find
someone to go in their stead may send an e-mail to Housing and
Residence Life with their top three choices, but this gives Housing
and Residence Life the ability to choose additional options if the
student’s preferences are not available.
Signed contracts and a $100 advanced payment is due on March 30
for apartment residents and April 1 for dorm residents. These can
be dropped off at the cashier’s office in DuBourg Hall or at
Housing and Residence Life’s office in the Student Village.
Appointment times will be posted online on the evening of Feb.
