Have you ever been to a Billiken basketball game and felt as if
something was missing? But what is missing? There is the action,
the cheers and the entertainment from the players, cheerleaders,
dance team, Billiken band, Blue Crew, students and fans. What could
possibly be missing?
It’s simple: The Billikens are in need of a fight song.
Sure, the band plays “When the Saints Go Marching In,” thus
becoming our unofficial fight song, but Saint Louis University is
the Billikens, not the Saints.
So, the opportunity to make SLU history and show some Billiken
pride for the blue and white now rests in the SLU public’s
hands.
All students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to create an
original fight song by participating in the SLU fight song
contest.
The contest runs from Feb. 9 to Feb. 20. All entries must be
submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 to [email protected] or by video
submission to the Student Government Association’s office in suite
243 of the Busch Student Center.
“One part of the contest is that the fight song should follow to
the tune of ‘When the Saints Go Marching In,'” said Andrew
Chappelle, Black Student Alliance Senator. “The song has become a
SLU tradition and we don’t want to throw it out … just add to
it.”
The fight song may be created and performed by several
individuals but only one individual can submit the entry. Entries
that are chosen as finalists will be required to perform their
fight-song submission on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. at
Wackadoo’s.
The chosen fight song will be performed at the Wednesday, March
3 Billiken basketball game against Louisville at the Savvis Center.
In addition, the winner will receive merchandise from SLU Athletics
and Alumni Relations and a Wackadoo’s gift certificate. A plaque
will be installed in the BSC with the lyrics and winner’s name.
The idea for a fight song has been long discussed by the SGA, as
former presidents Jay Perry, Mike Cappel, Mike Rozier and Nick
Sarcone, current president, have all pitched the idea for a fight
song into their campaigns. Perry tried to create a fight song
during his term, but the concept did not go over very well.
SGA, Billiken Band, Blue Crew, SLU Alumni Relations, SLU
Athletics and Wackadoo’s are sponsoring the contest. For more
information, go to SGA Web site at sga.slu.edu.
