Prepare for flu-like symptoms as students come down with a case
of spring fever this weekend. The fever heats up the campus of
Saint Louis University Friday, April 23, with Student Activities
Board’s annual carnival, as the Astroturf transforms into a ground
full of rides, games and more.
Carnival rides will include a 40-foot Ferris wheel, swings, salt
‘n’ pepper shaker, scrambler and many more. The Commuter Student
Association will be sponsoring the Gyroscope, while the Resident
Hall Association will be sponsoring a mechanical bull. The bull
will run from 2 to 6 p.m. and will cost $1 per ride. In addition to
the rides, more than 30 student organizations will sponsor a
variety of booths.
Starting at noon, bands will be performing on the side stage,
located at the beginning of the Astroturf. The side stage is being
sponsored by KSLU. Five Side, Greek Week Battle of the Bands
winner, will kickoff the concert, taking the main-stage around 5
p.m.
Red Walls will take the stage next. According to music critics
this band is the next hottest thing out of Chicago and the band to
watch for in 2004-2005. They recently performed at South by
Southwest, a huge music festival held in Austin, Texas.
Headlining will be the pop-punk rock group Lucky Boys Confusion
will take the stage. “This band is really popular, and because they
have a good following at SLU; many students were asking SAB to put
in a bid for Lucky Boys Confusion,” said Erica Rancilio, SAB
President.
Zebrahead, will follow, promises to be energetic and to get the
crowd moving.
“One thing that we always try to think about is whether the band
will make a good concert outside for this carnival-type event,”
Rancilio said.
Food will include the usual: cotton candy, popcorn and snow
cones. Students for Life will be selling funnel cakes. Food and
beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, will be available;
however, SAB is currently in the process of negotiating a vendor
for those services.
Spring Fever will conclude with a fireworks finale at 10:30 p.m.
At that time, everybody does not have to go home, but they cannot
stay on the turf–as the city of St. Louis has a noise policy that
goes into effect at 11 p.m. The carnival is free and open to all
SLU students.
“Spring Fever is an event like no other here at SLU. While SAB
typically brings in several concerts throughout the year, Spring
Fever is a carnival that includes concerts, fireworks and booths
that hopefully offers something for everyone,” Rancilio said.
