Late-Night Snacks

“When it hits your lips, it’s so good!” While the preceding
quote may reflect the cinematic wit and wisdom of Frank the Tank’s
Old School beer guzzling abilities, it also serves as a testament
to the glory of the night owl lifestyle.

Indeed, partying is hard work. Whether you’re stumbling out of
Humphrey’s after last call, attempting to stop the ringing in your
ears from a stellar night at the Pageant or looking to refuel an
over-crammed brain, local establishments provide options for
after-hours cuisine. The iron-stomached University News proudly
presents the following places to get your food on.

Uncle Bill’s

3427 S. Kingshighway Blvd.

No Billiken’s undergrad experience is complete without a
bleary-eyed visit to this diner located on Kingshighway. Known
throughout campus for their breakfast, Uncle Bill’s serves stacks
of pancakes and cups of coffee perfect for discussing last night’s
adventures. Open 24 hours, it’s the ideal place to either end your
night or start your day.

Courtesy Drive-In

3153 Kingshighway Blvd.

Yet another Saint Louis University favorite is the “slinger.”
The irresistible mixture of chili, beef, eggs and other
artery-choking ingredients digests like manna from heaven to a
beer-battered stomach. “Cheap” is the operating word at the
Courtesy, so keep a few bucks in reserve and stop by this retro
diner, also located on Kingshighway.

Eat-Rite

622 Chouteau Ave.

Discriminating burger junkies would be wise to visit this quaint
downtown diner on the corner of 7th Street and Chouteau. While the
menu is similar to the Courtesy Drive-In, Eat-Rite’s claim to fame
is clearly their offer of six bite-size hamburgers for only $1. At
these rock bottom prices, Eat-Rite is just the place to begin a
lucrative career in competitive eating.

White Castle

1111 Macklind Ave.

Want to be the most popular guy on campus? Offer to make a run
to Whitey’s around 3 a.m. on weekends. Their signature Slyder
hamburgers are so tasty that, before you know it, you’re inhaling
them like a box of Tic Tacs. The folks at White Castle realize
this, and will gladly sell you a Crave Case of 30 for the royal sum
of around 20 dollars.

Jimmy John’s

3674 Forest Park Pkwy.

Mentioned elsewhere in this fine guide to all things St. Louis,
Jimmy John’s is a new sub shop that recently opened within walking
distance from SLU’s campus. Most notable is that unlike its early
-bird competitors in the sub business, Jimmy John’s delivers until
4 a.m. with a minimal charge tacked on to items.
