A Saint Louis University student was struck by a car last Thursday while crossing Grand Boulevard at the West Pine Mall crosswalk.
The student, a sophomore, was walking east on the Mall when the incident occurred. According to witnesses, the student stepped into the street after the light had turned in the pedestrian’s favor. A vehicle in the curb lane continued through the intersection and struck the student.
The driver, who is unrelated to SLU, stopped his vehicle and remained at the scene to talk to police. He said that a truck driving in the left lane had obstructed his view of the traffic signal, according to Chief Jack Titone, director of the Department of Public Safety.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Saint Louis University Hospital and released after less than two hours, Titone said. She did not sustain any serious injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was issued a court summons for violating the electric signal, Titone said.
During his 12 years at the University, Titone said that two other students have been involved in accidents while crossing Grand. One student was bumped by a vehicle while crossing against the light, and another was grazed by a bus while standing at the edge of the sidewalk, he said.
Titone admonished students to think defensively when crossing at this dangerous intersection. Students should always wait for the signal at the crosswalk and make sure that no cars are continuing through the intersection before they proceed, he said.
