You have our money. Where’s our student union?
The student body may not be that na?ve to believe a newly renovated Busch Memorial Center would just spring up overnight, but we do expect some tangible sign of progress.
As of now, more than 11,000 students have made a financial commitment to this project already-and all they have to show for their money is a committee going over reports gathered months and years ago.
In other words, we’re paying for people to talk.
A wish list is great; it’s a step in the right direction. But that same wish list was created months ago under Project SLUnion, the Student Government Association initiative that spearheaded the push for a new student union.
It’s understandable that projects like this take time. However, in good faith, the administration and the SLUnion Planning Committee must give us something to chew on-something that makes us feel our money is well spent.
In five years, perhaps the end result will be amazing. It well should be, for the money we’re paying, but for the students here and now who see an additional $25 or $50 on their tuition bill, there is no benefit.
Give us something-something to whet our appetite.
We’re asking for plans, for a timeline, for communication. It’s amazing how understanding students can be when they get a little information.
Kathleen Brady, vice president for Facilities Management and Civic Affairs, will be making her presentation on the construction next week. We have high hopes for a candid discussion of where our money is going. Any student asking the same questions should attend next week’s SGA meeting, Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Saint Louis Room of the aging BMC.
We’ll see you there.
