That’s right; I finally did it for the first time. He “made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” My Godfather virginity has finally been lost.
It all began with a statement that I made about two weeks ago. We were sitting around the office on production night discussing some of the great movies that everyone had seen. The Godfather came up, and I said that I hadn’t seen it. A number of people were shocked, others were sympathetic, but everyone agreed that I needed to see it.
Well, I did some research that night and realized that it had won numerous Academy Awards, which I had not known before that, and I also discovered that my roommate owned all three parts.
So, I made myself a date to watch the first installment of this historic series.
Friday rolled around, the day that I had set aside, and I sat down with my lunch and popped the movie in.
Having no prior knowledge of the story, I started off a little confused because the movie jumps right into the characters and their present actions.
It was a little hard to figure out who was who and how everyone was related. However, I quickly caught up and thoroughly enjoyed the next three hours.
The movie tells the story of the Corleone family and their struggle with who will keep the family in power when Marlon Brando’s character, Vito Corleone, the Godfather, is nearly murdered.
After an attempt on Vito’s life is made, Michael, played wonderfully by Al Pacino, steps in and does his best to help out the family.
The movie portrays his transformation from an Ivy League war hero to one of the baddest mobsters you’ll ever see.
Every element of the story is well done, and the story is so believable that you find yourself wanting to know more about the saga.
The good news if you’re thirsting for more about the Corleone family is that there are two more installments, Part II and III. Those are the next two movies on my list, for sure.
The experience of watching The Godfather is something that no movie fan should miss.
Francis Ford Coppola has truly created a masterpiece that already is and will forever be considered one of the greatest films of all time. I highly recommend that you do as I did, and put away a few hours that you can spend getting to know the Corleone family.
