Saint Louis University administrators will allow eight students to use their $2,000-per-year residential scholarships to offset tuition due to a shortage in on-campus housing.
Following housing appointments last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 22 students were left without anywhere to live on campus. Fourteen elected to go on a waiting list for University housing; Director of Housing and Residence Life Argyle Wade said that he expected openings will develop soon and guessed that all will find spaces within a week.
The eight remaining students, however-all eligible for residential scholarships-chose to begin searching for non-University housing. Because of the lack of space on campus, they will be able to transfer their residential scholarships to a tuition discount.
Wade said that the University had not been faced with the major housing shortage that some in the Student Government Association and elsewhere had feared.
“We placed about 2,000 students in three days, and only about 1 percent didn’t get space; I think that’s a pretty good ratio,” Wade said.
Wade said that students who applied late for University housing will not be able to similarly shift their residential scholarships toward tuition if there is still not sufficient space. However, he said that, “if they’re flexible” about housing arrangements, it is likely that all who applied will be able to live on campus as new openings emerge.
