A campaign almost seven years in the making at Saint Louis University is one step closer to the finish line.
After the Student Government Association passed the necessary legislation, several SLU students associated with the Workers Rights Consortium presented their plans to the President’s Coordinating Council on Tuesday, March 20. Because SLU President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., and Provost Joe Weixlmann, Ph.D., were not in attendance, an official vote hasn’t been reached yet, but a final meeting will be held sometime next month. The date is yet to be set.
The students began their presentation with an introduction on what the WRC’s mission is, then opened the floor for the Council to ask questions.
“It seemed to have gone positively,” said one presenter, John Carroll.
The WRC is a student-chartered campaign against the use of sweatshop-produced merchandise. A positive vote by the PCC would officially add SLU to the list of universities that are affiliated with the WRC.
Said another presenter, Christina White, “I am optimistic because people seem to be open to the idea [of joining WRC], but it will take even more effort to ensure that it follows through.”
They hope for a final decision sometime within the next month and a half.
